Lead poisoning down in U.S. adults
Beginning of Story Content Far fewer people are showing high levels of lead in their blood than in the past 15 years, according to a U.S. report. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday said that about six out of every 100,000 employed adults had elevated lead levels in 2009, down from 14 per 100,000 in 1994. Lead is a soft, naturally occurring metal used in many products. The metal can be found in contaminated soil or water, old paint, inexpensive jewelry and other consumer items, such as blinds and leaded crystal, which used to be the main source of the contaminant. Now, in people aged 16 and older, lead poisoning is almost entirely a workplace health problem, the CDC said. “Workers in the manufacturing, construction, and mining industries account for the highest proportions of workers with elevated blood lead levels,” the report’s authors wrote. Measures to improve and expand prevention strategies should focus on those industries, they added.

If a child does swallow a trinket that may contain lead or cadmium, Good Housekeeping recommends immediately calling Poison Control at 800.222.1222.
